The EMC Directive (2014/30/EU)

Almost every electronic product sold in the EU falls under the EMC Directive. It is also the directive that most often sends a design back to layout, because electromagnetic behaviour is decided long before anyone books a chamber.

What it covers

The EMC Directive requires that equipment does not generate electromagnetic disturbance above a level that stops other equipment working, and that it has an adequate level of immunity to the disturbance it will meet in its intended environment. Both halves matter: emissions and immunity.

  • Emissions: conducted (mains and signal ports) and radiated
  • Immunity: ESD, radiated RF fields, fast transients/burst, surge, conducted RF, voltage dips and interruptions
  • Conformity is self-declared against harmonised standards; no notified body is involved for EMC

Does it apply to you?

If your product contains active electronics and is placed on the EU market, assume yes. There are carve-outs, but they are narrower than teams expect.

  • Radio equipment is covered by RED instead, which absorbs the EMC requirements
  • Components with no direct function for the end user can be out of scope, but a module sold as a finished product is not
  • Inherently benign equipment and custom-built evaluation kits for professional use are excluded

What testing looks like

The generic standards EN IEC 61000-6-1/6-2 (immunity) and EN IEC 61000-6-3/6-4 (emissions) apply when no product-family standard fits. Residential limits are 10 dB tighter than industrial, so the intended environment changes the pass/fail line before a single measurement is taken.

  • Conducted emissions, 150 kHz to 30 MHz, on every power port
  • Radiated emissions, 30 MHz to 1 GHz, extended to 6 GHz when internal clocks are fast
  • The full immunity suite, run against defined performance criteria you have to write down first

Common failures

  • Radiated emissions from switching converters, harmonics riding out on unshielded cables
  • Clock harmonics coupling into I/O, appearing at 100 MHz-plus spacing across the sweep
  • ESD resets because the enclosure ground and PCB ground meet at the wrong point
  • Surge failures on mains-powered products with no coordinated protection on the input
  • Passing on a bare board and failing with the real enclosure, cables and firmware in place

Frequently asked questions

Is there such a thing as EMC certification?

Not in the EU. EMC conformity is self-declared: you test against harmonised standards, compile a technical file, and sign a Declaration of Conformity. A lab issues a test report, not a certificate of conformity.

Can I use pre-compliance results in the technical file?

Pre-compliance evidence supports your engineering rationale but does not replace testing to the harmonised standard. Its value is that it removes surprises before the accredited campaign.

Does the EMC Directive apply if my product has Bluetooth?

No: radio equipment falls under RED, which contains the EMC essential requirement. You still perform EMC testing; it is just declared under the Radio Equipment Directive.
